A saggar is container that encloses ceramic ware within a kiln. Saggars are usually made of refractory clays or heat resistant metal. The saggar can be used to “protect” the ware from the kiln atmosphere or flames. The saggar can also be used to “expose” the ware to fumes created by volatile materials placed inside the saggar along side the ware. Combustible saggars is a contemporary term for non heat resistant containers that serve to hold other combustibles in contact with the ware during firing or to cover the ware with a fine layer of ash, thereby creating local pockets of reduction atmosphere. Saggar fired pottery can or cannot be made durable for functional items. Always ask the potter if the ware can hold water or is food safe.
