The Concept: Colored China Clay images are composed on and “printed” from a slab of
stoneware clay. The Process: A ½ inch thick stoneware slab is allowed to dry to a “leather hard” stage. Colored slips made of kaolin with permanent pigments are used to make images. Designs are brushed, rolled, dropped or drizzled onto the clay slab. Various two dimensional ideas are brushed on paper, dried, and “rolled” onto the clay slab. To create visual layers, one color is gradually applied over another, building the designs, colors and textures on the base matrix. Once decorated, the stoneware slab is flattened. A moistened piece of substrate canvas is placed over the slab. Pressure is applied using a rolling pin to transfer the clay slip composition onto the substrate. Because China Clay is inert and the pigments used are permanent and stable, the printed clay images remain intact. Firing is not required for the final product. TOP |
